Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) treasurer Arun Dhumal has said the International Cricket Council (ICC) needs to take a call on the T20 World Cup soon in order to allow cricket boards across the globe to plan accordingly and organise bilateral series and tournaments.
Arun Dhumal, speaking to indiatoday.in, said cricket boards around the world are facing a lot of challenges and have incurred revenue losses in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic and ICC’s delay in deciding the fate of the T20 World Cup will not help them.
Dhumal’s comments come after Indian Premier League (IPL) chairman Brijesh Patel told this website that the BCCI is looking at the September-October window for hosting the IPL. BCCI president Sourav Ganguly, in a letter, addressed to the stakeholders, said the governing body is hopeful and ‘looking at all possible options’ to host the IPL.
Stressing that the BCCI is certainly discussing the possibility of hosting the IPL in 2020, Arun Dhumal said the September-October window is the only chance for BCCI to go ahead with the T20 league.
The T20 World Cup is scheduled to be held in Australia from October 18 to November 15. The ICC was expected to take a call on hosting the 16-team World Cup in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic in April. However, all agenda items in its board meeting were deferred to May 10.
The ICC, after its recent board meeting on May 10, said that a call on the T20 World Cup will be deferred to July as it ‘gets only one chance to make this decision and it needs to be the right one’.
“We are discussing the possibility of hosting the IPL this year. In case, it is feasible, we will try and organise it. As of now, the situation is not really very clear. But talks are going on and we are trying to explore options,” Arun Dhumal said.
“That (September-October) will be the only window wherein ‘n’ number of matches can take place. If that window is not available, then we might not be able to host the IPL.
“The ICC should be able to decide on it quickly because in the current situation everybody in world cricket is facing a lot of challenges. In case, they have clarity about the window available, all these boards can plan some bilateral cricket or whatever in case we are free during that time and if it is safe for the players to play tournaments.
“That is why it will be the best case if the ICC can decide on it earlier so that the world has clarity. If this is not happening, then we can know ‘this much window is available and…
